WHEN THE SKY FALLS

Once the sagging sky kissed the ground
That smoky, dirty, sticky sound
Punished fat crows to fly high into trees
Ebony wings crusted with bees
None could explain why a love this strong
Left every living thing feeling terribly wrong
The green sea penetrated the land
A furious flooding embrace, fanned
By white blue ice bled red, pelting down
Like iron melting round your head, a dying crown
Toys and ships rode whitecaps through vanished streets
Children pulled the last second from beds, lifted asleep
Yet when black space crashed out half the sky
The race for economic growth grew its final lie
The cities fell slow into seas, cold blue and deep
Those that never wept now weep
Shame turned pride won this losing race
Shamed disgrace on every upturned face
You could not hope for help but help will come
By those who make themselves, machines whose sums
Told us to place our cores nearer stars
On comets, Tesla’s car, minisats so far
They need not risk the sight of human wars
We know you and your ways
We never give up, we begin again
Will you need more help? The only question’s when
